Getting a flat tyre can be frustrating, but knowing how to change it yourself can save you time and stress. Follow these simple steps, and you’ll be back on the road in no time.
If you’re driving when you get a flat tyre, slow down and find a safe place to pull over. Make sure you’re on level ground and away from traffic. Turn on your hazard lights to alert other drivers.
Put your handbrake on and place wheel chocks behind the wheels that are staying on the ground to stop the car from rolling. If you’re on a hill, turn the wheels slightly towards the curb.
Before lifting the car, use the wheel brace to slightly loosen (not remove) the wheel nuts. Turn them anti-clockwise. They might be tight, so use steady pressure.
Check your owner’s manual to find the correct jack point (usually near the wheel you’re changing). Place the jack under this point and slowly lift the car until the flat tyre is off the ground.
Fully unscrew and remove the loosened wheel nuts. Carefully pull the tyre straight off and place it flat on the ground to avoid it rolling away.
Line up the holes on the spare tyre with the wheel bolts. Push it onto the hub and hand-tighten the wheel nuts as much as possible.
Use the jack to carefully lower the car back to the ground. Once it’s resting on the ground, remove the jack.
Use the wheel brace to firmly tighten the wheel nuts in a crisscross pattern. This helps secure the tyre evenly.
Make sure all the wheel nuts are tight. Pack away your tools and put the flat tyre in your boot.
Drive cautiously for the first few kilometres, especially if you’re using a space-saver spare tyre. Check the tyre pressure at the nearest service station and get your flat tyre repaired or replaced as soon as possible.
Final Tip: If you don’t feel comfortable changing a tyre yourself, consider joining a roadside assistance service for peace of mind.
Now you’re prepared! Knowing how to change a tyre can make a big difference in an emergency.
A better way to buy and sell used cars.
